Execution Over Excuses: What October’s Stats Reveal
THE ARENA: BOILER ROOM VS APPRENTICE 2
Every month, we run two competitions, and they serve completely different purposes. The Boiler Room is full freedom. Trade any pair. No drawdown limits. Just you, the market, and your ability to execute under real pressure. Sponsored by Octa with a $5,250 prize pool, this is where you prove your strategy works when it counts.
Apprentice 2 is different. If you lost more than 40% in the previous comp, you’re not punished, you’re rebuilt. Trade Gold only. 5% max daily drawdown. Entries must be within 1 minute of a new 5-minute candle opening. Breach twice in one day, you’re out. It’s designed to strip away the chaos and force precision. Slow you down and make you think before you click.
These competitions aren’t just about prizes or bragging rights. Justin uses this data to build better traders. Every trade, every breach, every win and loss reveals patterns. It shows where traders are strong and where they’re breaking. It exposes gaps in risk management, emotional triggers, and timing issues.
This feedback loop is how the Tribe gets sharper. Justin reviews the stats to identify what lessons need to be created, what content needs to be refined, and where the training needs to focus. The Tribe always has a place to elevate because the lessons are built from real data — your data.
I’ve been watching the stats stack up throughout October. Every trade logged. Every win and loss recorded. Every breach flagged. As the competition runs, the data builds, and by the end of the month, I have a complete picture — not just of who won and who lost, but of why it happened.
I’m not looking for what happened. I’m looking for why it happened.
Because the stats don’t just show me who won and who lost. They show me what’s working, what’s breaking, where the psychology is cracking, and who’s actually getting better month after month.
Let me walk you through what I see.
Grant Smith: The High Win Rate Hiding a Dangerous Habit
Grant, you’ve been at the top for months. 105% return. 88.8% win rate. 89 trades. You’re putting in the reps, and it shows.
But here’s what the data reveals: your average loss ($3.86) is more than double your average win ($1.83). You’re holding through drawdown, letting trades go negative, waiting for them to come back. And 88% of the time, they do.
But you’re training yourself to hold losers. And the moment the market doesn’t come back, one trade wipes out weeks of wins. The addiction to the win rate is masking broken risk management. You can win 90% of the time and still blow an account. One loss that doesn’t reverse — down 10%, 20%, 30% — and everything’s gone.
Here’s what needs to change next month: focus on ONE metric — average win versus average loss. Get your average winner to at least double your average loss. Not 1.5x. Not “close enough.” Double. If you do that, you go from being a competition winner to being a consistently profitable trader who can scale this edge to real money.
Grant, you’re at a crossroads. Keep chasing the high win rate, or fix your risk management and build something sustainable.
The data is clear. What you do with it is up to you.
Tian Van-Der-Walt: The Sniper Who Stacks Wins
Tian, you placed 3rd in September. You placed 2nd in October. You’re not just consistent — you’re a surgical trader.
Look at your October win rate: 96.6%. Out of 29 trades, you lost once. Your profit-to-loss ratio is 6.56 to 1. You’re not trading every day. You’re waiting. Watching. Stalking your setup.
You took 29 trades while Grant took 89, and you still placed second. Quality over quantity.
But here’s what the data reveals that needs attention: in September, your profit factor was 0.44. That means when you lose, it’s costing you more than your wins pay you. With a 96% win rate, that profit factor should be through the roof.
The question: are you cutting winners too early? Are you letting the rare loser run? You’re so close to having an unstoppable edge. The accuracy is there. The discipline is there. Now it’s about optimising the risk-to-reward so when you’re right 96% of the time, the numbers reflect it fully.
Marius Harmse: The Master of Selective Execution
Marius, let’s talk about what the data shows across four months of competition.
July: 5 trades, profitable. August: 3 trades, profitable. September: 1 trade, profitable. October: 7 trades, profitable.
Four months. Sixteen total trades. Four winning months. Zero losses overall. This is what elite selectivity looks like. You’re not trading often, but when you trade, you’re executing with precision. Your profit factors in July (16.78) and August (2.31) show that when you win, you win big relative to the risk you take.
Marius proves that less is more when you know exactly what you’re looking for. No overtrading. No forcing entries. No chasing the market. Just ruthless patience and flawless execution when the opportunity presents itself.
This is sustainable, scalable trading. This is what it looks like to trade like a sniper instead of a machine gun.
Michael Mrazek: From Perfect Execution to Sustained Consistency
Michael, in August, you had a perfect month. Five trades. Five wins. Zero losses. +$2.95. Profit factor 0.00 because you literally had no losses to calculate against. October? You scaled up. 35 trades. 88.6% win rate. 4.62% max drawdown. You went from 5 perfect trades to 35 trades with near-90% accuracy, and you kept your drawdown under 5%.
This is what sustainable scaling looks like. You proved you could execute perfectly on a small sample. Then you increased volume while maintaining discipline and risk management.
Michael’s not overtrading. He’s not forcing setups. He’s found his edge, and he’s executing it consistently. This is how you build a foundation that can handle bigger accounts and bigger profits.
Danny Mills: The Slow, Steady Climb to Profitability
Danny, let’s talk about the journey. September: -$0.96. Just barely in the red. 36 trades. 52.78% win rate. Profit factor under 1.0. October: +18.62%. 41 trades. 70.7% win rate. 3.50% max drawdown.
This is what improvement looks like. Month by month, you’re getting better. Your win rate jumped from 52% to 70%. Your risk management tightened — max drawdown dropped to 3.5%. You went from break-even to consistently profitable.
You’re on the right track. The data proves it.
Adriana Bekker: The 87% Win Rate That Lost Money
Adriana, you won 87 out of every 100 trades. And yet you lost money.
Your Max Loss to Average Win ratio is 47.72. When you lose, your losses are 47 times bigger than your average wins. If you’re making $1 on your average winning trade, you’re losing $47 on your average losing trade. The 13% you lose wipes out everything — and then some.
This isn’t a strategy problem. It’s a psychology problem. And it’s fixable. Fix the risk management, cut losses fast, let winners run — and you go from losing money to being one of the most consistent traders in the Tribe.
One adjustment. That’s all it takes.
A Comeback Story: Taking Advice and Executing
I want to talk about something that doesn’t always show up in the leaderboard stats but matters just as much: the comeback.
Back in September, I had a conversation with a Tribe member who’d been struggling. They reached out, told me they were taking ownership of their mistakes, and asked for advice on how to work their way back into the main competition.
And guess what? They listened.
They went into Apprentice 2. They followed the rules. They took the advice about the 5-minute entry rule. They became a more patient trader. And in October? They made it back to the leaderboard.
I’m proud of you, Michael Mrazek. You took the advice. You didn’t make excuses. You didn’t blame the market or the rules. You went back to basics, rebuilt your foundation, and came back stronger.
This is what the Tribe is about. Learning. Rebuilding. Elevating.
Apprentice 2: The Long Road Back with Desmond Smyth
Desmond, you’ve been grinding through Apprentice 2 since August. You breached in the main comp, got sent to Apprentice 2, and you’ve been fighting your way back ever since.
August was rough — you took 11 trades, won 2, and lost 9. Your win rate was 18.18%. You lost money. But here’s what I see in your October data: you didn’t quit. You came back. You kept trading. You followed the rules. And in October, you posted +$31.91 with 20 trades, a 60% win rate, and zero breaches.
This is what rebuilding looks like. It’s not pretty. It’s not fast. It’s grinding through losses, analysing what went wrong, making adjustments, and showing up again.
You didn’t blow up. You didn’t revenge trade. You didn’t give up. That’s growth.
If you keep stacking months like October, you’re not just recovering — you’re building something real. Small wins. Consistent execution. Discipline under pressure. That’s the foundation that turns into serious money down the line.
What the Stats Teach Us
Grant teaches us: win rate means nothing without proper risk management. You can win 88% of the time and still be building the habits that blow accounts. High volume only works if your average win is bigger than your average loss — otherwise, you’re just practicing how to lose faster.
Tian teaches us: patience and precision beat overtrading. Wait for A+ setups, and the win rate will reflect it.
Marius teaches us: you don’t need 100 trades to be profitable. Elite selectivity and surgical execution compound over time.
Michael teaches us: scale up by replicating the same discipline that worked on a small sample. Perfect execution builds confidence for higher volume.
Danny teaches us: small wins compound. Month-by-month improvement turns break-even traders into consistently profitable ones.
Adriana teaches us: win rate means nothing without risk management. Cut losses fast, or one bad trade wipes out weeks of progress.
The comebacks teach us: rebuilding works. Follow the process, take advice, execute with discipline, and the results follow.
Once Is Good. Consistency Is Elevation.
Doing it once doesn’t change your life.
October was good. You showed up. You executed. The numbers prove it. But one good month isn’t enough. Consistency is what separates traders who make money from traders who build wealth.
And here’s the truth: if you’re not profitable yet, you’re not failing — you’re still learning. That’s where elevation happens. The traders who blow up aren’t the ones who haven’t figured it out yet. They’re the ones who rush. Who compare themselves to the leaderboard. Who force trades because they think they need profits NOW.
Go slow to go fast.
The moment you stop competing with the leaderboard and start competing with your last trade, everything changes. Your emotions align with what the market demands — patience, discipline, ruthless risk management — and profitability comes faster than if you’d rushed.
The competition isn’t here to make you rich overnight. It’s here to teach you lessons. And the traders who let the data speak — who review their trades and hone in on what needs fixing — are the ones who elevate.
October proved you can execute. November will prove whether you can sustain it.
Because anyone can have one good month. The traders who build real wealth? They show up in month two, month six, month twelve. When it’s boring. When it’s hard. When the market shifts and tests everything they’ve learned.
Consistency isn’t flashy. But it’s the only thing that compounds.
The leaderboard resets. The opportunity is there.
The question is: will YOU execute, or will you excuse?
Until Next Month Tribe…
See you in the November Comp Tribe 😉
